Cwmbran High School

As part of Torfaen’s 21st Century Schools Programme and following a period of statutory consultation, it was approved by the Council to close Fairwater and Llantarnam Secondary Schools at the end of the 2014/15 academic year. These schools have been replaced by a new school which has been established on the existing Fairwater site. The new school is called Cwmbran High School and opened in September 2015.

Project Information

The contractor Willmott Dixon Construction was appointed to undertake the works at the Fairwater site. The initial investment of £6m has seen a refurbishment of the lower school block with the introduction of new kitchen and dining facilities and the remodelling of existing classrooms. Major improvements to the existing heating and electrical systems have also been undertaken.

Other works at the new school have involved the remodelling of the main school hall in the upper block with a new stage for performances. The former caretaker’s bungalow has also been remodelled to form a new reception/administrative area with a glazed link to the existing upper block.

External works have comprised of a new ‘drop off ‘zone with direct access road onto Ty Gwynn Way. Additional security fences and barriers have also been erected.

The website for the school can be accessed at Where you can find up to date news about the curriculum, staffing arrangements, school uniform and much more.
