New Croesyceiliog School
The new Croesyceiliog School will see an investment of £30 million by the council and Welsh Government as part of the 21st Century Schools programme and will provide accommodation for 1200 pupils aged 11-16. This is the biggest single investment in the programme to date in Torfaen.
The new building will be on the existing site and will replace accommodation dating back to the 1950s & 60s which is clearly outdated and in very poor condition. The new school will cover a floor area of approximately 10,800 m2 and will provide a high quality modern learning environment as well as being designed to be highly energy efficient, resulting in a significant reduction in the operational costs of the buildings. As part of the funding requirements for the project, a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) ‘excellent’ rating will be required.
The main school building will be three storeys high with a double-height assembly hall, dining area, drama and learning resource centre.
There will be a separate Sports Block located so as to give immediate access to the existing hard courts and excellent playing fields and sports pitches that the school currently benefits from. The Sports Block will be two storeys accommodating a double height Sports Hall, Gym and Activity Studio which the school has indicated it will make available to the local community outside of school hours along with a new flood lit all-weather pitch which will be constructed on the site of the existing buildings once they have been demolished.
The landscape design has been developed to embrace the existing features such as woodlands and fields and provide interesting space to learn and play.
The new school development will also see a new vehicular entrance being formed off the Turnpike Road roundabout, the current access from Woodland Road will be mainly a pedestrian link with access for emergency and disabled vehicles only.
The main contractor for this project is Kier, who have successfully worked in partnership with Torfaen in recent years as part of its 21st Century Schools programme, this has included the provision of new schools namely Nant Celyn Primary, Blaenavon Heritage VC Primary and Crownbridge School. Kier have also carried out extensive refurbishment and extensions to school buildings at Penygarn Community Primary, Abersychan School, Ysgol Gyfun Gwnllyw and Griffithstown Primary.
