Gwent Whole School Food and Fitness Policy

- Provided schools with a template Gwent Whole School Food and Fitness Policy. The policy enables schools to link the positive effects that diet, and physical activity can bring to learners’ physical, mental and emotional well-being
- Developed a new draft partnership agreement between Torfaen Leisure Trust (TLT) and a Torfaen Secondary School to enable wider community use of the schools excellent sports facilities outside the school day and school term time. This will act as a model agreement for other schools interested in similar partnership agreements
- Worked with internal and external partners to engage and encourage participation in sport and physical activity. Examples include Tots and Physical Literacy through to Over 60’s Pickleball and fitness sessions
- Further developed targeted projects such as IfyougoIgo, school support and Betterman to provide health and physical activity support for the residents

- Encourage and support schools to help learners participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day
- Continue to increase opportunities and access to sport and physical activity for the residents of Torfaen
- Work with additional partners to promote the benefits of a physically active lifestyle on all aspects of residents lives

- Supported 17 young people awarded Duke of Edinburgh Award completions with 40 young people currently participating
- Provided outdoor learning opportunities such as kayaking, mountain biking, caving to challenge young people’s comfort zone, develop skills and interest and live active life styles
- Provided a curriculum of well-being activities to increase knowledge, skills and attitudes if young people toward healthy relationship, healthy life choices and developing positive mental attitudes

- Negotiated between 2019-21 £296,125 from new developments for the provision of community facilities including highways, canal improvements, open space, adult recreation and childrens play
- Designed and assessed feasibility of improving inclusive play at Pontypool and Cwmbran parks

- Progress work on enhanced sports pitch provision in Llantarnam and the North of the County
- To continue to develop the static play areas at Pontypool Park and Cwmbran Boating Lake which will improve the availability and choice of play equipment for children with disabilities

- Engaged 454 young people in the National Youth ballot ‘Make Your Mark’ resulting in 3 safer relationship sessions to address mental health in young people
- Supported 10 youth forum members to undertake mental health and resilience awareness training to gain the skills to stay emotionally healthy

- Use members of Torfaen Young People’s Alliance to help review mental health services for young people during the Autumn to ensure young people have a voice in planning mental health services and have the opportunity to raise issues. This is to ensure professionals: better understand the issues affecting young people today
