This summer, Torfaen Play Service are doing their bit to help improve the local environment and reduce their carbon footprint by handing out 3,000 reusable drink bottles. This will potentially stop around 60,000 single use plastic bottles from being used over the summer playscheme period.
Each child that attends one of the 35 playscheme sites across the borough will receive their own reusable bottle free of charge. The bottles will then be handed back in at the end of each play day, with children able to keep them when playschemes close at the end of August.
The initiative has been funded through the All Wales Play Opportunities Grant, essentially allowing Torfaen playschemes to become a single-use plastic free provision.
In addition to this, children are given free healthy snacks at all playscheme sites across Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil, supporting working families and those that may be struggling financially.
The 'holiday hunger' project is funded by a variety of partners including Welsh Government, The School Holiday Enrichment Program, Community Councils, Torfaen Leisure Trust and the “Streetgames” initiative. Staff have also been trained to sign post families to local agencies who provide foodbank vouchers and financial support.
Councillor Mandy Owen , executive member for children and young people, said "It's amazing that Torfaen is not only providing a wide range of free play activities this summer for children free of charge but we are also feeding our children and encouraging them to help the environment too".
Councillor Fiona Cross, executive member for the environment, said: “The environmental impact of plastic bottles is staggering, so by being able to give out free reusable water bottles to children at our playschemes for free is fantastic.
“When playschemes have finished there’s a lot of opportunities for the children to refill their bottles with water (for free) throughout the borough. There are Refill water sites all over Torfaen and sites vary from reception of the Civic Centre (Pontypool) to various Torfaen Leisure Trust sites.
“We will never be able to recycle our way out of our waste problem, however this will help people reduce and reuse their plastic bottles before eventually recycling them long into the future.
