Sheltered/retirement housing is rented accommodation which is specially designed for older people.
There are numerous sheltered schemes throughout Torfaen, each offering varying types and sizes of accommodation, including flats and bungalows. These are provided by Bron Afon Community Housing, Melin Homes, Linc Cymru and Aelwyd Housing Association.
Sheltered/retirement housing allows people to live independently in a safe and secure environment, with professional support close at hand should it be needed.
It is designed for people over a certain age, although, in certain circumstances, younger people may be considered, e.g. sheltered/ retirement housing may be suitable for some disabled people.
Accommodation is completely self-contained, grouped together and may include communal facilities on site, for example, a residents' lounge. You will have the option of joining in social and leisure activities but if you prefer to enjoy the privacy of your own home that is fine; the choice is yours.
Some sheltered/retirement housing accommodation is fitted with a 24-hour emergency call system so that help can be summoned at any time of the day or night.
As a sheltered/retirement housing resident, all housing maintenance is covered by your landlord.
If you are receiving social care services in your own home, we will continue to provide them when you move into sheltered housing.
Depending on your personal circumstances, you may be able to claim housing benefit.
