Work is well underway on the new buildings, Kier have their own secure offices and welfare units for staff with separate parking for construction staff. Temporary car parking and fire evacuation have been provided for the school which has allowed the contractor to complete preparatory works for the new buildings. Kier as a ‘Considerate Constructor’ have long established procedures in place to ensure the site is safe and secure for all staff and pupils and constantly monitor operations on site to ensure these procedures are adhered to.
In the last month foundations have been completed with much of the steel frame for the new buildings erected, this is now clearly visible from Woodland & Turnpike Roads. During the period that the steelwork was being erected and to mark this key milestone in construction, Torfaen recently invited Kirsty Williams the Welsh Government Education Minister to site, along with representatives from Torfaen County Borough Council, Kier, Croesyceiliog School as well as other key stakeholders.
As well as much of the steel frame being completed, handrails, netting and metal decking is currently being fitted in preparation for the concrete pours which will form the floor slabs on each level, precast stairs to the main building have also been installed.
The haul road between the two new buildings is almost finished with a permanent refuelling area to be installed shortly. Drainage works to the western playing fields have also commenced and should be completed over the summer vacation.
In addition to the main construction works, we are pleased that Kier play a major part in ensuring there is involvement with the school pupils and local community in activities relating to the project. Pupil Ambassadors have been appointed who will visit site on a regular basis to view progress and will be able report back to their respective year groups both verbally and through social media, in fact their first visit took place on 9th July. Such engagement is also beneficial to pupils who may wish to consider a career in the construction industry.
See below for some of the activities that have taken place together with ideas for further engagement with the school. Kier also provide a regular newsletter for nearby residents to keep them up to date with construction progress.
