Discover the countryside of Torfaen by using the Torfaen Leisure Route. This route provides a totally traffic-free cycling and walking experience.
Running the length of the Country Borough of Torfaen, from Blaenavon in the north to the boundary with the City of Newport in the south, the route covers approximately 18 miles and has been designed for the enjoyment of cyclists and walkers, and in parts, horse-riders, hence it’s name the "Torfaen Leisure Route".
In the south the route follows the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal towpath from the boundary with the City of Newport (National Cycle Network Route 49) to Pontymoile Canal Basin . Route 49 also continues northwards from Pontymoile along the canal towpath to the boundary with the County Borough of Monmouthshire at Mamhilad. NCN 492 branches from NCN 49 at Forge Hammer, Cwmbran and runs northwards to Pontypool. From Pontypool, the route runs along the line of the old mineral railway to Blaenavon. Horse-riders can use the part of the route from Wainfelin, Pontypool to Varteg Bridge.
This is an easy route for all users, with a gradual uphill incline from south to north.
The Torfaen Leisure Route is part of the National Cycle Network, a network of attractive places to cycle throughout the UK. For more information contact Sustrans on 0845 113 0065 or visit the Sustrans| website.
