Description
The Food and Health & Safety Enforcement team carry out regular checks on all food premises in the Borough to ensure the public is protected and that high standards are maintained.
Visits to premises are normally carried out without prior notification, and are priority programmed according to the degree of potential risk. This ensures that higher risk premises are visited more frequently than lower risk premises.
Advice on food safety is offered to members of the public and businesses in Torfaen, and we also run training courses in partnership with the Adult Education Service.
All food businesses (food also includes drink) must register with the Council in order that we have an accurate record of those businesses in operation within the Borough. This enables us to arrange to inspect your business from time to time or simply to provide you with information and advice which you may find useful regarding food safety matters. Even if you don’t consider yourself to operate as a ‘business’ and, for example, give food away on a not-for-profit basis you are still required to register.
Registration is free and it is good practice to contact the Food and Health & Safety Enforcement team at least 28 days before you plan on opening so that we can provide you with any necessary advice. If you have, or are planning on taking over an existing food business you should register within 28 days after taking over.
