Cemeteries

 

Description

Torfaen County Borough Council are responsible for the management of four cemeteries within the area, these are located at Blaenavon, Pontypool and Cwmbran.

 

Blaenavon Cemetery located on Varteg Road opened for its first burial on 2nd August 1915 and has an area of approximately 10.6 acres.

 

Panteg Cemetery located on The Highway, New Inn, Pontypool opened for its first burial on 23 July 1906 and has an area of approximately 21 acres.

 

Cwmbran Cemetery located on Llantarnam Road opened for its first burial on 5 October 1892 and has an area of approximately 4 acres. This cemetery is now classed as a closed cemetery as it does not accept new interns.

 

Llwyncelyn Cemetery located in Hollybush, Cwmbran opened on 26 September 2011 and has an area of approximately 20 acres which includes natural woodland and meadow fields. Llwyncelyn cemetery provides the following burial choice:

  • Baby section
  • Cremated remains section
  • Lawn section
  • Traditional kerb section
  • Meadow section

The main cemetery office is located at Llwyncelyn cemetery.

Cemetery gates will be opened and closed at the following times:

 

1st April to 31st October - 9.00am - 8.00pm

1st November to 31st March - 9.00am - 5.30pm

 

Torfaen’s Cemeteries Service hold historic records relating to all burials in each cemetery. Grave searches can be carried out by contacting the Cemeteries Registrar.

 

Cemetery Fees

 

Cemetery fees are applicable to all four cemeteries and are subject to annual review.

Who is the service for?

Anyone can be buried within Torfaen, however the following policy applies for any non resident:-

 

Fees for all burials of persons who were not inhabitants of, or did not die in the County Borough within the last twelve months shall be doubled unless the grave rights have been previously purchased and the owner of these rights moved out of the County Borough through no fault of their own due to ill health.

How do I access the Service?

Most people needing to arrange a funeral will contact a funeral director who will make all of the necessary arrangements. You can however arrange a funeral yourself. Careful consideration should be made regarding this however, if you wish to consider this option, you are advised to contact the Cemeteries Office to discuss this before making a final decision.
