Biodiversity

Description

Biodiversity is a relatively new word and is short for biological diversity. It is the variety of life that exists all around us. It is all living things from the tiny garden ant to the giant redwood tree.

The County Borough of Torfaen is a unique area in terms of the wide range of landscape features and wildlife habitats that it contains. Habitat areas include heath-land at the Blorenge, upland Bog at Waun Afon, coniferous and broadleaf woodland and open water to name just a few.

Many species of fauna and flora that are identified in the UK priority list for conservation are present within Torfaen. Examples include European otter, skylark, bullfinch, lowland heath and upland oak woodland.

Torfaen County Borough Council has produced a Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) that provides a long-term strategic plan for co-ordinating the protection and enhancement of biodiversity. The plan is a key document aimed at ensuring the local delivery of the UK Government’s Biodiversity Action Plan as well as the requirements of Section 74 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Torfaen’s Biodiversity Partnership oversees the implementation and review of the plan. It is also an important aid to land use planning and as such is adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). The LBAP consists of a series of species and habitat action plans that describe the actions needed to protect each feature and broadly the organisations that will be involved in this work. A summary of the Local Biodiversity Action Plan| is available to download here.
