DAN 24/7 is a free national, confidential service providing 24 hour advice to drugs and alcohol users as well as anyone else wanting information on substance misuse. The helpline enables individuals to access local treatment and support services. Callers can also get advice on reducing the risks associated with substance misuse or discuss any issues with the service's specialist staff. Call 0800 6 33 55 88.

 


 

Thirteen year old Scott Stanley from Abersychan school won first prize in the junior section of the Alexander Cordell prize for Travel Writing. Maria Davies from Ebbw Vale, John Harrison from Cardiff and Liz Jones from Ceredigion were shortlisted for the main prize. Mr Harrison won and picked up £500, with runner up prizes of £300 and £150. Cwmbran library is holding a Craft Fair where you can find the perfect Christmas presents for your family and friends. It's on Friday 10 & Saturday 11 November from 9am to 4pm. The hand-made gifts include watercolour paintings, floral arrangements, wooden gifts, salt dough and glass painting.

 


 

September's Jazz in the Park was a huge success with the 'sold-out' signs outside all four ticket only show. Keep an eye on Torfaen Talks for details of next year's event.

 


 

The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway has reached the biggest milestone since it first operated trains 23 years ago. It has been granted an Order to extend its line from the Whistle Inn to Blaenavon, some two miles to the south. The railway is concentrating its efforts on extending the line from its existing main station at Furnace Sidings.

 


 

New seatbelt laws are now in force for children in cars and adult coach passengers. It means:  

  • Children shorter than 135 cms (approx 4ft 5ins) must use the appropriate car seat or booster cushion
  • It is illegal to use a rearward facing child restraint in a vehicle seat which is protected by an active front airbag.
  • Seated passengers in buses and coaches aged 14 years and over must use seat belts where they are fitted.
