Exciting Canal Proposals

Torfaen recently hosted a national conference on how canals can be an important part of the regeneration of south Wales. Councillor Bob Wellington, Leader of Torfaen Council, presented the case for how important the canal is to the regeneration of Cwmbran town centre, highlighting the economic and social benefits of the proposed restoration, along with the creation of a new town centre canal basin.

The restoration of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is entering an exciting phase with the announcement of a development grant of £250,000 from the Big Lottery Living Links project towards a feasibility study and business plan as part of the final stage of a £25 million bid to the Big Lottery. The day was organised by the Institute of Welsh Affairs.
