7million new look for health and fitness in Pontypool

Pontypool leisure centre has reopened with a new look and new name. It is now called Pontypool Active Living Centre to reflect its variety of services to encourage everyone to become more active and keep healthy. The £7 million refurbishment leaves the old centre unrecognisable so come along and have a look around.

The transformed centre has two new hydroslides in the swimming pool and great new spectator seating. Over 50s enjoy discounted entry three mornings a week for swimming, sports hall activities and exercise classes. A Healthy Living Team based in the centre organises activities such as the ‘Walking the Way to Health’ scheme, the GP referral scheme, and midwifery services including breast-feeding support, aqua natal classes, and parent support groups.

Councillor Bob Wellington, Leader of Torfaen Council, said: "I would like to thank everyone for waiting while this amazing two year development has taken place. Since it has reopened it has been a huge success with queues of visitors. Again I hope people are patient while the centre and staff get used to its overwhelming popularity. I can assure you all that it is well worth the wait. It has been transformed into a first class health and leisure facility."

Other facilities include:

  • An under 18s after school club providing instructed activities including netball, water polo, keep fit classes, badminton, squash and girls & boys football for £1 per hour from 4pm - 6.30pm.
  • 35 station fitness suite with equipment for people with disabilities.
  • Registered playgroup, crèche and Treasure Island multiplay facility.
  • Five court sports hall which doubles as a large function room plus multipurpose activity room.
  • New café bar with views and access to the park and playground.
  • Spa treatment room with massage, physio and alternative therapy treatments.
  • Dance/exercise studio.
  • Family changing rooms.

Torfaen County Borough Council has redeveloped the centre in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly Government, Sports Council for Wales and Local Health Board WANLESS funding.
