Blaenavon Recreation Centre and pool were initially closed in January 2007 as a result of storm damage. On the 18 July 2007 the council decided to permanently close both facilities on the basis that there was an opportunity to reconsider the relatively high cost of operating the facility against the wider pattern of future need in Blaenavon.
In relation to that wider need, a special Council meeting on the 18 July made a policy decision to pursue a new community focused school in Blaenavon and also to work collaboratively with the Local Health Board and others to provide a range of services.
When the new campus comes to fruition there will be enhanced leisure and fitness facilities over and above what is currently available (although there will be no pool).
