The people of Torfaen are justly proud of the book that put their region on the map - Alexander Cordell’s Rape of the Fair Country.
So much so that Torfaen Libraries ‘Big Community Read’ which is launched on World Book Day Wales – Thursday 5 March - features the story of the bitter struggle between ironworkers and their cruel masters.
Torfaen Library Authority has bought new copies of Cordell’s 1959 classic tale set in and around Blaenafon, with funding from the Welsh Books Council, which
co-ordinates activities for World Book Day in Wales.
And already the authority has begun working with reading groups throughout the area to promote ‘The Big Read’ – which will last 6 months - as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the publication of the book.
Copies of ‘Rape of the Fair Country’ by Alexander Cordell may be borrowed, or, requested free-of-charge at any Torfaen Library. Then share your feelings about by the book, by sending your comments to cwmbran.library@torfaen.gov.uk|
