Infectious Disease Control

The Food, Health and Safety Enforcement Team enforces infectious disease and other public health legislation. We do this by investigating around 200 food poisoning notifications each year, which are notified to us by the Public Health Laboratory or by GPs. We also investigate complaints from local residents who think they may have food poisoning.

Our Infectious Disease enforcement role includes

  • Investigating food poisoning notifications
  • Investigating complaints from the public about possible food poisoning cases
  • Investigating food premises that may be involved in a food poisoning outbreak
  • Providing information for businesses and members of the public
  • Collecting and reporting statistical information

If you want to know more about any of these subjects, please contact us. We have a wide range of leaflets and other information.

Our main customer for these services is the Government, who require us to provide most of these services by law, and give instructions as to how the services should be delivered. The services are intended to protect anybody who becomes ill with food poisoning symptoms in the Torfaen area, and this will generally mean Torfaen residents, although we also work with other local authorities in respect of more widespread outbreaks. The more direct customers for our services are anybody making a complaint or a request for services, and, of course, the businesses that are affected by our enforcement action.
