Countryside Strategy 2003 - 2006

The First Edition of the Torfaen Countryside Strategy was produced in 1998.

The preparation of the Strategy resulted in the development of a corporate view within and outside the authority, which is consistent with other environmental policy documents. The Strategy also encompassed a shared vision with other partners, interested groups and potential sponsors in the culmination of an Action Plan which identified a rolling programme of implementation projects.

The original Countryside Strategy identified the need to continually monitor and review the achievement of the aims of the Strategy and the implementation of projects within an integrated Action Plan that formed part of it. Part of the monitoring and review process includes the revision of the Strategy every three years. This edition is the First Review.

The Countryside Strategy encompasses four main topic areas, they are:-

  • Landscape Conservation and Enhancement
  • Nature Conservation and Biodiversity
  • Countryside Access and Enjoyment
  • Environmental Education, Visitor Information, Understanding and Appreciation

Each of the topic areas are discussed under separate chapters within the Strategy. However, it is important to point out that each of the topic areas are very much interrelated.
