Torfaen also provides a range of opportunities for countryside access via an intricate network of public rights of way, covering a total distance of 337kms. There is a series of walks leaflets available from the Countryside Service at Torfaen Council, as well as an annual programme of guided walks and other countryside events.View of the Canal Basin in Pontypool

The National Cycle Route (NCN 49 & 492), which is almost entirely off-road, runs from Newport, straight through the valley of Torfaen, up to Blaenafon. In parts the route follows the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal towpath, providing a scenic journey, and further north it runs along the old mineral railway lines. A leaflet of this route is available from the countryside service.
