Frequently Asked Questions
What are you aiming to achieve?
The extension and remodelling of the existing school site in order to increase the accommodation to 1,100 places to meet current and projected demand.
What will change for my children?
The improvements will mean that pupils will benefit from vastly improved facilities that will improve the teaching/learning environment for the whole school community.
When is it likely to happen?
The project will be undertaken in four phases –
-
Phase One (October 2009 – March 2010): construction of an on site coach park, new hard standing play area, major drainage channels, additional on site car parking and reparation of the existing playing fields;
-
Phase Two (Apr 2010 to Spring/Summer 2011): construction of a new teaching block housing 14 classrooms and a number of other ancillary rooms to the west of the existing main school block and situated on the current hard standing area;
-
Phase Three (Spring/Summer 2011 to Spring/Summer 2012): removal of existing demountable classrooms and construction of a new teaching and dining block housing the new dining hall and kitchen together with art and drama classes to the north of the existing main school block;
-
Phase Four (April 2010 to Spring/Summer 2013): refurbishment works to the main school building as necessary and affordable to create links with the new blocks and undertake priority maintenance works.
Will the pupils and staff be safe with so much building work going on? Will the running of the school be disrupted?
The Authorities will work very closely with the school to ensure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.
In terms of Health and Safety, this will be a major part of the planning process. Torfaen and its partner contractors, as well as the other Pan Gwent Authorities have a great deal of experience in dealing with construction on sites where schools are in session and will be mindful and sympathetic to the needs of the school in its day to day operations.
