Torfaen Pupil Referral Unit
Torfaen Pupil Referral Unit was established and registered in June 2009. We are a Portfolio PRU and educate children and young people who:

Experience emotional, social and/or behavioural difficulties

Experience anxiety based disorders

Have medical needs which prevent them from attending mainstream school

Are pregnant or young parents and are not able to attend mainstream school

Have been permanently excluded and are awaiting a managed move to another school
Torfaen PRU is an amalgamation of the previous ESBD provision and Oakfield SNRB, the Educational Psychology ELDAs service; Llantarnam Learning Zone, Torfaen Youth Access and Alternative Tuition have merged under a single management structure.
Pupil Referral Units are maintained by the LEA and are specially organised to provide education outside the school setting for pupils who might not otherwise receive a suitable and appropriate education.
Torfaen PRU aims to ensure that young people are educated within their home schools unless exceptional circumstances mean that they need to be educated outside of mainstream School for a time limited intervention. The PRU therefore works closely in partnership with all Torfaen Primary and Secondary Schools and has a ‘revolving door’ policy with a focus on Outreach. We have a PRU Manager, two Inclusion Managers, two Lead Teachers, and a team of Teachers, Key Workers and Support Workers who will teach across all Key Stages.
Torfaen PRU is based at Upper Cwmbran Centre, Ty Glyn, Pontypool and The Nook, Abersychan and all Torfaen Primary and Secondary Schools.
The PRU Manager is led by a management committee which includes representatives from Schools, Elected members, the LEA, Social Services, YOT, Health, Voluntary sector, Parents/Carers and representatives from Industry and the local community.
Torfaen PRU is registered with WAG and will undergo full Estyn inspections.
