Training & Learning Opportunities

There are many different routes to starting a career and training is only one of them. All 16 and 17 year olds are eligible to start training as soon as they leave school in Year 11.

The current programme of work based-training in Wales is known as Skill Seekers and is available at three levels. Each level is based on a national framework of qualifications known as NVQ's and compare to GNVQ's, GCSE's, AVCE's and A Levels. Skill Seekers Programmes are funded by ELWa which is the National Council for Education and Learning in Wales. Whilst on these training Programmes, you will be entitled to a wage or an allowance.

Modern Apprenticeships [Level 3]

These are available in a wide range of careers and will give you the chance to develop skills in communication, number, information technology and other skills that your career will require. Entry will require an interview and ability test and usually but not always a GCSE or NVQ qualification. Training will be with a local firm or training company and might require attendance at a college or other training place.

National Traineeships/ Foundation Modern Apprenticeships [Level 2]

These are similar to the Modern Apprenticeship but lead to NVQ at Level 2 and from which you can progress to Level 3 or employment. This training programme will provide you with the skills demanded in the real world.

The skills have been approved by employers and when you qualify you will be able to make valuable contribution to a business with your skills in IT, problem solving, communication and team working. The demonstration of your competence in the work place will lead to an NVQ at level 2.

Skill Build [Level 1]

Skill Build will help you to try different jobs if you are not quite sure what you want to do. Skill Build prepares you to apply for jobs by offering assessment and preparatory training which can include preparing to enter employment, the army or voluntary or community work with the Princes Trust. The length of the time of the course can be flexible to enable progression. The training will include extra help with your Basic Skills and help you to search for jobs.

Skill Build can include a Step-up Course which takes place which takes place within a small group in a friendly situation with a local training provider.

This is available both to new applicants and those who wish to progress. You should also be aware that some firms advertise first in the local or regional newspapers.
