Children are eligible for admission to school at the start of the school year in which their fifth birthday falls (i.e. 1 September to 31 August inclusive). Children are not legally required to attend school until the start of the school term following their fifth birthday.

Children enter or transfer to junior schools or junior departments within primary schools at the start of the school year in which their eighth birthday falls (ie 1 September to 31 August inclusive). In primary schools, the infant and junior sections are simply departments of the same school and children progress through the school from the infants to junior without having to transfer elsewhere.
Where a catchment area is served by separate infant and primary schools, parents will need to apply for a place for their child(ren).
