Appeal - Parents have a statutory right of appeal against certain decisions

 

Advisory Teacher - A specially qualified and experienced teacher who provides additional advice

 

Code of Practice - A guide for schools and LEAs about the help they give to children with special education needs

 

Educational Psychologist - Someone who is qualified in both psychology and teaching employed by the LEA to advise and help teachers and where necessary, to make recommendations to the LEA on providing for the needs of some children

 

Individual Education Plan (IEP) - A plan written in collaboration with parents and professionals to help a child educationally

 

Local Education Authority - The department of your local council (Torfaen) responsible for providing education

 

Mainstream School - An ordinary school

 

Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) - A teacher in a school who has special responsibility for co-ordinating SEN provision with the school
