Special Educational Needs - Assessment

When children have additional educational needs these are managed in a staged process as described in the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice for Wales.

Meeting pupils educational needs is the responsibility of Headteachers and Governing Bodies but for those with very serious difficulties this is undertaken in partnership with the LEA (Local Education Authority).

Most children with additional needs will have those needs met in their mainstream school using a combination of focused teaching and/or extra support and/or input from specialist support teams. A very small number of children will need to access specialist educational provision.

Torfaen LEA is committed to a partnership approach to meeting children's additional needs where parents/carers, school staff, LEA officers, specialist support staff, other agencies and the children and young people themselves work together to maximise possible progress.
