Disabled Students Allowances

Disabled Students' Allowances are available for students in Higher Education and provide extra financial help if you have a disability or a specific learning difficulty e.g. dyslexia.

Disabled Students' Allowances are designed to help disabled students study on an equal basis with other students.

The amount you can get does not depend on your household income. You do not have to repay this help.

Disabled Students' Allowances are paid in addition to the standard student finance package.

What can you use them for?

Disabled Students' Allowances are available to assist with:

  • specialist equipment you may need for studying - for example, computer software
  • a non-medical helper, such as a note-taker or reader
  • extra travel costs you have to pay because of your disability
  • other costs - for example, tapes, paper, ink cartridges

If you are interested in applying for Disabled Students’ Allowances, contact Student Support. We can advise you on the application process involved.
