Children's University
The Children's University is an innovative and fast-growing scheme which awards participation in out of school hours activities; it is part of a national network headed by The Children and Young People's University Cymru.
The Torfaen Children's University (CU) awards credits to young people who attend learning activities out of school hours. CU began in Birmingham in 1993/4 as an organisation designed to 'create a platform upon which young people could recognise and explore their potential as learners'.
NEWI in Wrexham were the lead in introducing the scheme in Wales and is where the head office is based. CU operates outside school hours meaning young people attend activities entirely by choice. In Wales we are actively seeking to introduce a national CU system through a credit framework. A National Agreement sets out the principles and practices of the CU.
The Torfaen Children's University scheme was launched in May 17th 2005
and is part funded by UWCN.
