Childminders

Registered childminders are professional day carers who work in their own homes to provide care and education for other people’s children in a family setting.

Childminders offer a flexible approach to day care. Children cared for by childminders can become involved in the local community i.e. parent and toddler group, playgroup etc. Arrangements can also be made to cover childcare during school holidays for older children. A mid-day meal is usually provided and the hours of care and type of activities can be negotiated. They can also reflect your family's own cultural background.

Hours and fees vary between childminders and will need to be negotiated. It is advisable to sign a contract of agreement before the childminding begins.

For more information on childminders in your area please contact the Family Information Service on 0800 0196330 or Care & Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW|) on 01495 761200.

If you would like to become a registered childminder full training and guidance is available on 01633 647400.

The National Childminding Association (NCMA) will offer ongoing support to childminders together with the opportunity to join the local Childminders Network. Tel: 01291 641697 for more information or NCMA Wales on 02920 342336.

Never consider leaving your child with a minder who is not registered or whose insurance cover does not protect your child.
