Adult & Community Education

Welcome to the Torfaen Adult and Community Education website. We aim to provide a wide range of courses to suit all our customers, if you want to develop new skills, work towards a qualification or enhance your career prospects; our courses provide an ideal opportunity.

 

The main types of courses offered include:

  • Computing - a wide range, from very beginner to level 3 (comparable with GCE level) to more specialist courses in web page design, networking and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Business Courses – Including book keeping & computerised accounts.
  • GCSEs & pre-GCSE – a broad range-including English and maths and other subjects as varied as English Literature and Psychology
  • Languages - Starting at complete beginner level and progressing to GCSE standard, in European languages such as German, Spanish, French and Italian, Welsh (of course) and British Sign Language.
  • Creative Studies – Including art, photography, textiles, flower arranging, pottery jewellery making and woodwork.
  • Health & Self – Including classes such as Counselling Skills and Stress Management, as well as recognized vocational qualifications such as Diploma in Holistic Massage, and Fitness Instructor
  • First Aid and Food Hygiene - Recognized qualifications.
  • General Interest - Wide range covering a variety of opportunities to learn music/dance, and courses such as Introduction to Wine.
  • Day schools – A range of interesting subjects, designed to help you achieve something in a day, as well as giving you a ‘taste’ of adult education.
  • Clubs - Such as Bobbin Lace, Bowls Club, Sewing Club and Cake Decorating.

Tuition fees vary from £1.56 to £2.60 per hour, with concessions available for those on low income or means-tested benefits. A small membership fee of £1.50 per term applies and if the course leads to a qualification, certification costs will be payable. Many courses are funded by the European Social Fund and are FREE (To qualify for these you must be a resident of Torfaen, aged 16-64 and not in full-time education). Where courses are not funded by the European Social Fund tuition fees apply.

  • GCSE and pre-GCSE English and Maths
  • Vocational courses, such as Fitness Instructor, Teaching Assistants, Office Skills, IT
  • Welsh
  • First Aid
  • Food Hygiene
  • Help with CV writing, job search, interview techniques … and much more.

Free e-learning support for most subjects is available via the Torfaen Learning Platform.
