Welsh Language Policy

Torfaen Council is committed to offering the public an equal standard of service in Welsh and English, in line with the requirements of the Welsh Language Act (1993). The Council’s Welsh Language Scheme| / Cynllun Iaith Gymraeg|, last revised in 2006, sets out the measures it is taking to realise this commitment and has been formally approved by the Welsh Language Board.

The Council has also produced a guide to staff| / canllawiau ar gyfer staff|, outlining their responsibilities under the scheme. Although written primarily for an internal audience, the guide explains clearly and concisely what Welsh-language services members of the public can expect from the Council.

Each year, the Council is expected to submit a monitoring report| / adroddiad monitro| to the Welsh Language Board, analysing the progress it has made in implementing its scheme. A copy of this year’s report (2007) is available to download.

For the first time this year, the Welsh Language Board conducted a ‘risk assessment’ of the Council’s performance in a specific area of Welsh-language service provision. This year’s assessment was conducted in the language skills field; a full copy of the Board's recommendations| / Argymhellion y Bwrdd| is available to download.
