Race Equality Scheme

In keeping with its strong commitment to equality and as required by the Race Relations Amendment Act Torfaen County Borough Council has had a Race Equality Scheme since 2001. As a Public Sector body we are required to review this policy to assess our progress and establish if the priorities that were set within the Scheme are still relevant to our community and our services today.

The Torfaen Race Equality Scheme Review| details the work that has taken place across the Council to improve equality of access to people of all racial backgrounds and address racial discrimination.

This review details the issues that through consultation and discussion suggest need to be adopted by the Council as areas requiring work and investment in order to ensure that all people are treated fairly by the Council regardless of their ethnic background.

With only a small percentage of people from ethnic minorities (less than 1% at the last census) it can be difficult to gather information about the experiences and concerns of people from ethnic minorities. Every opportunity has been taken to establish the issues that have greatest relevance for the Torfaen community and identify those issues over which the Council can have a positive impact. There is a great deal of work to do to ensure that every member of our community has equality of opportunity regardless of their racial background. This Scheme sets out what work the Council must do to develop such a guarantee.

The issues identified in this review have been highlighted through a combination of formal and informal consultation with members of the community, staff, our statutory partners and other community stakeholders.

We would like to take the opportunity to check the objectives that we set out for the Council in the following three years and to hear the opinion of all interested parties.

Please take the opportunity to comment upon this Scheme. If you do have any comment upon the scheme and wish to comment upon the Councils policy on ensuring racial equality please provide your comments to Vincent James, Equalities Manager. Should you have any queries about any other work the Council is undertaking in relation to equalities please do not hesitate to contact Vincent James in writing, by telephone or by email.
