Leader of Torfaen
Robert George Wellington (Bob) has been Leader of Torfaen County Borough Council since the elections of 10 June of 2004. He was previously Deputy Leader and was the Cabinet Member with responsibility for Economic Development, Objective One and Social Inclusion.
Previously WLGA Spokesperson on Equal Opportunities, he now holds the positions of WLGA Spokesperson on Economic Development and WLGA Spokesperson on Regeneration, and is currently the Chair of the WLGA Labour Leaders’ Group. He has a strong interest in mainstreaming equality into policy and good practice, and is committed to promoting an awareness of diversity into Local Authority service delivery and employment.
With over 25 years experience as an Elected Member, Councillor Wellington has held key positions, including Chair of Development, Vice Chair of Personnel and Chair of Estates. He was Chair of the Wales Coalfield Community Campaign for a number of years and now holds position of Treasurer.
Councillor Wellington completed the much acclaimed SYNIAD Leadership Academy Course in 2002.
In 2004, Councillor Wellington was elected Chairman of the South East Wales Economic Development Forum as well as being a Director of the Local Government Data Unit. In his spare time enjoys reading, gardening and beekeeping.
Councillor Wellington is County Borough Councillor for the Greenmeadow Ward.
