Register of Electors
How do I register to vote?
Electoral registration takes place locally by each local council electoral registration office. You can register to vote at any time during the year, by filling out a rolling registration form which you can download from the Aboutmyvote| website. The electoral register is updated on a monthly basis, except between August and November when each local council performs an annual canvass of their area.
You must be on the electoral register to vote in elections and referendums. If you filled in the registration form delivered to your home last autumn, you should already be on the electoral register. But if you think you may not be registered, for example, if you have recently moved home, then you need to register to vote. You can register to vote in future elections at any time of the year, simply visit the Aboutmyvote| website. If you are unsure whether you are registered, you can check by contacting your local authority and can look up the contact details here. You can also find out more about applying for a postal vote.
What is the electoral register?
The electoral register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote in a council area. You must be on the electoral register to vote at elections, and not being on the register can also affect your credit rating. You are not automatically registered, even if you pay council tax.

There are two versions of the register - the full version and the edited version. Your details will appear on the full version of the register, but you can choose whether or not your details appear on the edited register by ticking the 'opt out' box on your registration form. The full register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime, and checking applications for credit. The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.
