Helping hand to increase recycling

Residents and traders using the Household Waste Recycling Centre in New Inn are being offered better advice to maximise recycling at the site.

Employees from Viridor, who run the site on behalf of the Council, are approaching users and asking whether they can help separate out any recycling they may have brought.

The centre has helped Torfaen Council become the best recycling authority in South Wales, recycling 45 per cent of waste.

But to push up rates further, the local authority and Viridor say they are keen to lend a bigger helping hand.

A Torfaen Council spokesman said: "Users of the site are already doing a fantastic job but sometimes people can get confused about what can be recycled there.

"To prevent this from happening, staff are on hand to offer more comprehensive advice."

You can already recycling a wide range of waste at the site including electrical goods, cardboard, wood, garden waste, paint, plastic bottles, food and drink cans, textiles, mixed glass and newspapers.

Before visiting the centre, residents are asked to separate their recycling from their non recyclable waste.

Any residents who bring household waste in a van or trailer must apply for a free permit.

There is a charge for the disposal of trade and commercial waste.

To apply for a permit phone 01495 766608 or visit the council website.

For more information about the site you can download a leaflet by visiting the Rubbish, Waste and Recycling| area of the website.
