Bone presented to canine recycler

Heroic mascot Dan Can the Super Recycler presented a bone to a Cwmbran pooch who has recycled more than 20,000 bottles in six years.

The Torfaen Council mascot honoured Tubby the Labrador at his home in West Pontnewydd, yesterday (Wednesday).

Twice daily the dog goes out for a walk and usually picks up at least six plastic bottles from wherever he can find them.

He then happily crushes them in his mouth and takes them back to his owner Sandra Gilmore who recycles them in her black box.

She estimates that in Tubby's lifetime he could have collected up to 26,000 bottles.

Mrs Gilmore, 51, believes her family pet is attracted to bottles because of the noise they make when he crushes them in his mouth.

Sinead Jackson, the Council's Waste Strategy Manager, who attended the bone-giving ceremony, said: "Tubby has done a magnificent job and fully deserves his bone.

"Thanks to enthusiastic residents and pets living in the County Borough, we are the best performing recycling authority in South Wales."

Torfaen County Borough Council currently recycles 42 per cent of its waste.
