New parents in Torfaen can now claim a £30 voucher towards the purchase of reusable nappies.
The Real Nappy scheme, which has been set up by Torfaen Council and will run until March 31 next year, aims to stop the landfill of disposable nappies.
It is estimated that the average child uses 5,000 disposable nappies before they are potty trained- enough to fill 156 black rubbish bags per child.
By switching to reusable ones families can also save £500 a year.
To help raise awareness about the benefits, a Nappuccino event is being held at the Cwmbran Integrated Children's Centre in Hollybush between 1.45pm and 3.15 pm on Wednesday July 15.
Torfaen Council's waste manager Cynon Edwards said: "Switching from disposable to real nappies can help save money and the environment. And as an added bonus new parents can now claim a £30 voucher towards their first purchase of real nappies."
Convenient and easy to use, real nappies have come a long way since towelling and safety pins. There's also no need to boil, wash or tumble dry them - they can be put in the washing machine and hung on the line, making them very easy to use.
Parents need to produce a birth certificate to claim their £30 voucher and incentive pack. For more information phone 01495 762200 or visit the Rubbish, Waste and Recycling| area of the website.
