Refuse vehicle helping with recycling backlog

A refuse vehicle will be used to pick up recycling in Torfaen today (Wednesday February 25) to help with a backlog of collections but materials will still be recycled, the local authority has promised.

Dangerous working conditions during the recent adverse weather meant recycling boxes could not be collected for four days earlier this month.

This has created a massive backlog of missed collections running into thousands.

To help the recycling service catch up a refuse vehicle will be used in areas including Pontnewydd, Ty Coch, Coed Eva and Croesyceiliog to collect recycling as well as the normal recycling lorries.

A refuse vehicle was also used to collect recycling on Saturday.

A Torfaen Council spokesman said the materials collected would be taken to Wormtech in Monmouthshire where they will be sorted on a conveyor belt and then recycled.

Any materials collected by the recycling lorries will continue to be taken to the Cleanstream Depot in Cwmbran and then recycled.

A Torfaen Council spokesman said: "The adverse weather created a large backlog running into thousands of boxes which recycling crews, who are working extra shifts, are struggling to clear.

"To help restore normality we’ve had to come up with an exceptional solution to exceptional circumstances but we promise that any materials collected by the refuse vehicle will be recycled.

"We would like to urge residents to keep up the good work and carry on recycling. The bad weather presented us with a set of problems which have taken some time to resolve.

"We would like to thank residents for their patience and support through this period and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."
