Recycling banks removed

Recycling banks have been removed from Blaenavon after vandals repeatedly targeted the facilities.

Torfaen Council say they were left with no choice but to remove banks for glass bottles and jars, paper, textiles and Tetra Paks from the Rifleman's car park after they were frequently damaged and set alight.

Alternative locations for the facilities in the town were explored but no suitable site was available.

The Tetra Pak bank has been relocated to Union Street in Abersychan where there are also facilities for other recyclables.

Banks can also be found at Talywain Rugby Club.

Christina Harrhy, Head of Technical Services and Performance, regretted that the banks had to be removed. "Unfortunately the reckless actions of vandals have denied Blaenavon residents of these facilities," she said. "We apologise for any inconvenience, but the constant vandalism has made these facilities unsustainable."

The Council held two awareness days at the Rifleman's site in July to talk to residents and promote recycling.

Fly tippers blighting recycling bank sites in Torfaen are costing taxpayers nearly £30,000 a year in clean up costs with up to ten tonnes of rubbish being dumped every month at 28 recycling bank sites across the Borough.
