Smashing WEEE recycling targets in Torfaen

Over 1,300 tonnes of unwanted electrical items such as TVs, fridges and freezers have been sent for recycling in Torfaen over the last 12 months - double the target set by the European Union.

Last July, the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) was introduced in the UK, setting targets for the recycling of household electrical items such as TVs, toasters, fridges/freezers and washing machines.

To respond to this new legislation, Torfaen County Borough Council and Viridor Waste Management, which runs the Household Waste Recycling Centre in New Inn on behalf of the local authority, introduced new facilities to meet the targets.

Separation of the electrical and electronic items have resulted in an impressive 9 kg of WEEE per head of population for treatment and recycling - more than double the 4 kg target set by the EU.

Councillor John Cunningham, Executive Member for Operational Services, said: "We're delighted with the results of this partnership. Torfaen County Borough Council is already one of the leading recycling authorities in Wales, diverting 42 per cent of our waste from landfill, and these results reflect the authority's commitment to continue improving recycling facilities and increasing the range of materials that can be recycled .

"I would like to thank Viridor and residents for their continued help in achieving these high recycling rates."
