Super hero shortlisted for big award

Torfaen's super hero Dan Can has been shortlisted for a major marketing award.

Dan, who is Torfaen County Borough Council's recycling mascot, has made it into the Welsh finals of the Chartered Institute of Marketing awards.

A presentation ceremony is being held in Cardiff on October 9.

Dan appears on the council's recycling web pages, www.torfaen.gov.uk/waste|, features in a school newsletter, visits local schools and community events and can be seen on the back of recycling lorries.

"I am thrilled to be shortlisted for an award," said Dan. "But, even more importantly, I want everyone to continue their brilliant work by recycling as much as they can. Remember recycle- if Dan Can You Can."

Councillor John Cunningham, Executive Member for Operational Services, added: "Dan has made a big impact and I'm delighted he has been shortlisted for an award."

Torfaen County Borough Council is currently the best recycling authority in South Wales, recycling 42 per cent of its waste.

This is two per cent more than the Welsh Assembly's 2009-10 target of 40 per cent.
