Pupils make uniforms using old rubbish

Pupils from Hollybush Primary School in Cwmbran made uniforms out of recyclable waste as part of an eco day.

The children arrived in hats made out of old paper, material and card and clothes made from plastic bags and bottles.

They also wore green to highlight the special day.

Officers from Torfaen County Borough Council's waste team and their recycling mascot, Dan Can the Super Recycler, were also on hand to raise awareness about green issues.

Throughout the day pupils took part in a range of activities including paper making and litter picking.

The School, which has a silver award in the Eco Schools scheme, plans to hold the theme day annually.

Eco co-ordinator and teacher Helen Stent said: "The children are so enthusiastic about the environment and want to do everything they can to protect it.

"They have made some lovely things. We were so impressed with some of the clothes they made out of rubbish."

Torfaen Council's waste manager Cynon Edwards added: "Schools in Torfaen are always coming up with fantastic ways of protecting the environment. We want everyone to recycle as much as they can."

Newspapers and magazines, aerosols, plastic bottles, tins and cans, glass bottles and jars and textiles can be recycled in residents' black boxes.

The Council is the best recycling authority in South Wales- recycling 42 per cent of waste.
