New hero visits a Torfaen school

A new breed of super hero visited a Torfaen school to promote recycling in the County Borough.

Dan Can the Super Recycler dropped in at Llanyravon Primary School to encourage pupils to use their black recycling boxes.

Torfaen Council's new recycling mascot also presented a wooden bird table to the school after 10-year-old pupil Esther Deidun won a competition in the local authority's recycling school newsletter, the Trash Times.

She beat nearly 150 entries in the competition which asked pupils to draw a comic strip featuring Dan Can or come up with some new super powers for the hero.

In Esther's comic strip, Dan Can was able to shrink landfill sites with special rays coming from his eyes.

Circulate Furniture Recycling in Blaenavon made the bird table from old wood.

Dan said: "It's great to see children recycling. My message to everyone is recycle- if Dan Can you can."

Llanyravon Learning Support Officer Denise Bishop, who runs the school's eco-committee and eco clubs, said: "The children are very responsive to recycling issues and Dan Can is a very fun, visual character they can associate with."

Councillor John Cunningham, Executive Member for Operational Services, said: "Pupils never fail to amaze me- they are so switched on to recycling.

"I'm glad they've taken to Dan and I hope the new mascot gets more people recycling."

Torfaen County Borough Council is currently recycling 37 per cent of its waste.

It is in the top 25 per cent of Welsh local authorities for its recycling performance.

Newspapers and magazines, glass bottles and jars, aerosols, plastic bottles, tins and cans and textiles can be recycled in the black box.
