Residents can now recycle drinks cartons

Residents in Torfaen can now take their drinks cartons to special recycling bins.

Torfaen County Borough Council, in partnership with Tetra Pak Ltd and the carton industry body ACE UK, has launched the carton recycling scheme.

Each year, UK beverage carton manufacturers produce around 55,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid.

This equates to around 2.3kg of cartons per household which can be recycled instead of thrown in the rubbish bin.

Cartons can now be recycled at special collections bins at the following places:

  • Prince Street car park in Blaenavon.
  • Cwmbran stadium car park
  • Ponthir Nursery car park
  • Sainsbury car park in Cwmbran
  • Llanyravon Golf Course in Cwmbran

After collection, cartons can be baled, transported to a recycling mill and then recycled into a range of products including plasterboard liner and high strength paper bags and envelopes.

Torfaen Council’s waste manager, Cynon Edwards, said: "We’re delighted that we can now offer this service in the county borough.

"It’s another way residents can recycle their household waste and we urge everyone to use it."

Torfaen’s recycling rate is currently 37 per cent – just three per cent short of the Welsh Assembly’s 2009-10 target.

And the Council is currently in the top 25 per cent of Welsh authorities for its recycling performance.
