Breastfeeding Support
Mothers who want support with breastfeeding their babies now have a range of new ways to gain help, thanks to a group of local trained mums. The 19 volunteers, known as peer supporters, have all breastfed their babies as well as undertaken a ten-week course in breastfeeding support.
Nicki Symes, Breastfeeding Co-ordinator for Torfaen Sure Start, said: "We are very excited about the new initiatives and hope mothers in Torfaen will find them helpful. Women tell us they give up breastfeeding before they are ready because there isn’t enough help for them. We are hoping the new services will help the drive to support mothers to breastfeed successfully for as long as they wish."
Torfaen is the first Council in Wales to achieve the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Certificate of Commitment.
