The New Gwent Record Office
In 2011 the doors will open on the Gwent Record Office’s new home in Ebbw Vale. This exciting development on the site of the old steelworks will provide the GRO with the facilities it needs to continue collecting, preserving and making its unique collection of archives available to the public.
Part of the new Office will be in the Steelworks General Office, a Grade 2* listed building. This will provide a large new public Searchroom, a Group/Education Room and staff offices.
A new extension will be built to house the GRO Collection. This will provide around 10km of shelves in the controlled environment needed to ensure that the Collection is accessible now and hundreds of years into the future.
The Councils of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen have all agreed to the funding for this development. This will enable construction to start this summer. The works on the conversion of the existing building will be completed ready for the National Eisteddfod in Ebbw Vale in the summer of 2010. The extension will be completed by the end of that year ready for the GRO to move its Collection in.
It is hoped that the extensive work involved in getting the Collection ready to move will cause as little disruption to our service as possible. When the time comes to move it will be necessary to close for a short period. We will keep you informed of any impact this will have.
If you would like to know anything more about this exciting project please feel free to contact Gary Tuson, the County Archivist.
