The Gwent Record Office is closed to the public until October when it will reopen as Gwent Archives at its new premises in Ebbw Vale. Please see the Opening Times| page for more details.
Finding the relevant record
The records held by the Office are listed in catalogues and indexes available for reference in the search room. The main indexes are:-

There is also a small library of reference books and published works about the history of the county.
Detailed guidance on using the search room’s facilities will be provided by members of staff.
Copies can be made subject to the documents’ physical condition and regulations regarding copyright. A scale of charges| is available to download.
Personal visits by researchers are encouraged, but for those unable to visit in person, a Search service by Record Office staff is offered at a charge of £25 per hour. Please contact us to obtain an estimate and application form. A list of independent genealogists and record agents (the Gwent Genealogical Research Service) can also be supplied.
Lists of local accommodation are available on request.
Record Office publications| include Guides to Research on subjects such as family history, history of houses, poor law, education crime and punishment, shipping, docks and harbours, as well as lists of parish registers and other types of documents.
