General Information
The Gwent Record Office is closed to the public until October when it will reopen as Gwent Archives at its new premises in Ebbw Vale. Please see the Opening Times| page for more details.
It is advisable to make an appointment by telephoning the search room before your visit. Microfilm or fiche readers may be booked for a 3 hour period.
Parish Registers are now available only on Microfilm to save wear and tear on the original registers. Researchers wishing to see parish registers should book a microfilm reader in advance if possible. Priority will be given to those who have made advance bookings but every effort will be made to accommodate others. Some of our newspaper holdings are also only available in microfilm format and a large-screen microfilm reader can be reserved to view these; please contact us to arrange this.
Visitors are required to complete a Reader Registration and Declaration form on their initial visit to the Record Office. Proof of identity including an address and signature (e.g. a driving licence or pension book) is required. Valid C.A.R.N. (County Archive Research Network) tickets will be accepted as proof of identity.
On arrival, visitors should report to the reception desk in the main entrance foyer of County Hall, where they will be directed to the Record Office. Car drivers should request a free token for exit from the visitors' car park.
