Business Rates - General Information
Business Rates (Non Domestic Rates) are payable on all business properties, whilst Council Tax is payable on all domestic properties. If your business includes both, i.e. you run a Public House, you will pay Business Rates on the business premises and Council Tax on your living accommodation.
Non Domestic rates collected are paid to the Government into a national pool. This pool is then shared out and together with income collected from Council Tax, Sundry Debts and grants provided by the Government is used to pay for the services provided by Torfaen County Borough Council.
Rates are usually paid by the occupier of non-domestic property. This will normally be either the owner/occupier or the leaseholder of the property.
The Welsh Assembly Government booklet ‘Business Rates: a guide to the non-domestic rating system’ is available in both English and Welsh language versions.
For further information the Business Link| web site is a Government-funded site, designed to provide businesses with a single source of clear and concise information on business rates.
