Validate UK

Validate cards

VALIDATE UK is a voluntary proof of age scheme for young people aged 12 to 18 years.

It aims to ensure that age restricted products are only sold to those legally entitled to buy them; it also helps those who may look younger than they are to prove their age. The 12-15 card is blue and white and the 16-18 card is yellow and blue.

The card holder's age is checked through their school record. Systems are in place to verify the age of applicants that have left school. This allows retailers to see at a glance the card holder's age. The card has a photograph, signature and hologram. An added security overlay can be seen when it is tilted sideways. Retailers supplying age restricted goods are supplied with posters, stickers and information leaflets.

The success of VALIDATE UK depends upon a partnership approach and the commitment of Trading Standards, retailers, schools, health promotion specialists, community safety officers, police, sponsors and young people.

Trading Standards Commitment

Trading Standards promote VALIDATE UK by involving as many young people as possible. Torfaen Trading Standards will endeavour to visit all senior schools within the borough and offer all students aged 15/16 (year 11) the opportunity to receive a card free of charge.. Every outlet believed to supply or sell age restricted products will be provided with window stickers, literature and point of sale posters.

Business Commitment

To get the full protection from VALIDATE UK retailers must always:

Compare

The photograph on the card with the person presenting it. If in doubt check the back of the card for the holder's name; ask them to spell it and check their spelling. Ask them to sign their name and compare signatures. Still unsure? Don't sell.

Check

The age boxes. If the holder is not old enough to buy or if the card appears to have been altered – don't sell.

PASS LOGOPlastic card

Check that the photo matches the young person and that the security overlay is in place by tilting the card. There is a hologram on the reverse.

Display

The VALIDATE UK window sticker and point of sale poster showing that you support the scheme and want proof of age.

Train

Your staff to follow these instructions so they know what to do if you're not there. Make sure they know – "Buying's Hard… without a VALIDATE card"

Inform

Trading Standards if you think a card is being misused. Make a note of the card's details and retain it. If you suspect misuse – don't sell.

Ask

For " VALIDATE UK " : it's not enough to ask "How old are you?"
