Local Housing Allowance

Local Housing Allowance – Changes in Housing Benefit for private tenants from 2008

Local Housing Allowance is a new way of working out Housing Benefit for private tenants. It is being introduced in April 2008 and is based on:

  • the area you live in and
  • who lives with you

There are no changes to the entitlement rules – this will continue to be based on your income and savings and proof of a valid tenancy. Payment will normally be to you rather than to the landlord.

LHA will not affect all private tenants straight away. A tenant will move onto LHA when

  • a new claim is made
  • there is a change of address

Tenants who claimed prior to April 2008 will continue to receive Housing Benefit based on the existing rules unless they change address or unless there is a break in their entitlement.
