Discretionary Housing Payments

Even if you already receive Housing Benefit, if it doesn't cover your rent you may be able to get some extra money by claiming a 'Discretionary Housing Payment' (DHP).

DHPs are additional payments for those in greatest need.

A DHP is not a payment of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit. It is paid in addition to those benefits.

Who can get a DHP?

Anyone who is struggling to pay their rent or council tax. You can only apply for help if you are in receipt of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit but it does not cover the full rent or council tax.

There are no set circumstances but you will need to prove to us that you are in need of extra help

How much can I get and how long for?

The amount of the DHP and how long you receive it for is decided by us. We usually grant it for a limited period for example 3 months and will then look at our decision again.

Please note-each year we are given a limited amount of money by the Government to award DHPs. Once this money has been used up we will no longer be able to award these payments however good your reasons are.

How do I apply for a DHP?

If you would like to apply for a DHP, please print off and complete the attached application form|.

Further information is available in the Discretionary Housing Payments - Help for those who need extra help with housing costs| leaflet.
